The Necessity of Thinking in the 21st Century (Liv Boeree @ TED)

Uppdaterat: 24 apr. 2022

Liv Boeree at TED 2018 - "3 Lessons on Decision Making from a Poker Champion"

Liv Boeree is a poker pro and in her TEDtalk she talks about how thinking is essential for great poker. The romanticised view of the person feeling their way to victory in poker is most likely a Hollywood invention. Because we people hate effort, so its easy to sell and romanticise the "win-just-from-being-awesome" narrative.

The problem is that creating this narrative is a big problem for when we actually want to get the work done and bring others in on it.

Liv says that it can be hard to separate a good strategy from a bad strategy when you are experiencing a bout of luck. Luck muddies the water a bit, but we can actually think things through and create a good systematic strategy which also helps us "create luck" or "be ready for when the winds of luck pick up" (pick the poetic phrasing that you like).

This is the reason that the Framework for strategic sustainable development (FSSD) exists and has been helping organisations adopt a better strategy that is proactive rather than reactive to legislation, media and popular opinion.

Intuition is a good tool in stable environments that fulfill specific criteria. However, these criteria are seldom fulfilled in a more complex VUCA-world and business context. As such we need good structures and approaches for going forward, what we call frameworks, that have been tried and tested. We also need systems thinking as Peter Sense writes about in his "The Fifth Discipline" or Donella Meadows in her "Thinking in Systems" (there are of course many others). This provides the basic world-view that most if not all modern fields of science are based on. The Socio-technical systems theory is based on other fields with this as its foundation (including evolutionary economics), and all sustainability research takes this as a starting point.

With these tools, which are easy and fun to start using, we have the foundations for thinking and acting effectively. Intuition can never be confirmed to be right, it feels just the same whether we are right or wrong. But thinking things through provides the transparency to check our process and make sure we haven't forgotten anything. It also helps us bring in others into the work. Thus we focus our mental horsepowers and can reach further, reliably.

All in all what I am trying to say is - be systematic and ask for expertise so you can be certain you aren't missing anything important.
